The Life-Changing Magic of the Mandala

The Life-Changing Magic of the Mandala

If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced” – Vincent Van Gogh The year 2000 was a dark time for me. I wore mostly black. I was grossly overweight and unhappy. I was drinking so much that it was affecting my company and my family life. I felt lost and alone. A few years prior to that I was cut off from my family of origin. Coming from a large tight knit family, being cut off was unheard of. Without the support I

What is a Mandala?

What is a Mandala?

One of the first things I need to do when telling people about my book or teaching a mandala class is explain what a mandala is. I learned most of what I know from my brilliant mandala muse, Merry Norris, of MerryNovaStudio.com and Paul Heussenstamm of Mandalas.com. While writing Activate Divine Creativity: The Life-Changing Magic of the Mandala, I did a lot of research on this topic. The most basic definition of a mandala is “circle.” Mandala is a Sanskrit word that literally translates to “circle”. Ok, then why don’t I just teach people how to draw circles? LOL!

How to Draw a Mandala

How do you draw a mandala? (See video at the end of the blog post). Get out your pencil and paper and join me in the video below. Within 15 minutes you’ll have a mandala. You’ll have a process that looks like magic to others and you can use over and over. This is the same process as my last blog post, “How to Doodle a Mandala”. I use this process to draw and paint mandalas of all sizes. The biggest one I’ve drawn to date was 6 feet in diameter. I had a ruler with me

Chakra Mandala Doodles Workshop October 5, 2019

Registration has closed for this event! Contact us if you have any questions. Thank you. Chakra Mandala Workshop, Silver Spring, Maryland Why a chakra mandala? As human beings, we have challenges. These challenges are often due to stuck memories that lie energetically in our chakras. As we are created, Divine energy is poured into our being and rests at the base of our spine, where the root chakra resides. As we evolve spiritually, the energy begins to move up through the chakras, with the ultimate goal of opening up this flow through the chakras into the crown

How to Doodle a Mandala

How to Doodle a Mandala

How do you draw a mandala? (See video at the end of the blog post). While there are many ways to draw a mandala, my favorite is to get out a pad of paper, a pencil and start doodling one! I find my best mandala moments are spur of the moment and not thought out. This whole thing (the book, the workshops, retreats and blog) all started from a simple mandala doodle. Once I realized I could just draw one without special equipment (a compass, a ruler, etc), I couldn’t stop. The first mandala I just doodled

The Mandala Guidebook Book Review

The Mandala Guidebook Book Review

Here’s a wonderful book that makes a perfect companion to my book, Activate Divine Creativity, The Life-Changing Magic of the Mandala. I have been studying and creating mandalas since 2000. There are quite a few good books available, however I have found most of them are either way to dense and academic, or are full of what look like computer generated mandalas to color. I teach a 10 week class based on my book. It was during this class that I discovered The Mandala Guidebook: How to Draw, Paint and Color Expressive Mandala Art . While my

8 Simple Steps to Draw a Mandala

Don’t be fooled, doodling is a powerful tool to activate your divine creative self. When doodling is combined with the power of the mandala, you are accessing deep parts of your creative self! Carl Jung encouraged his patients to doodle and color mandalas. I explain this in much more detail in the book, but for now, here are the 8 steps you can use right now! Step 1. Draw a dot Put a dot in the middle of your paper/canvas.  This represents the “seed” of an idea you want to explore and get creative with.  It’s like

Ever Changing: Always Changing

Ever Changing: Always Changing

This mandala was inspired by the ever changing nature of life. As I doodled it, I had no agenda in mind as to what I wanted to end up in the mandala. You may say, “That’s obvious! It’s so simple!” Yes, it is simple. The rule that everything changes is simple and easy if we allow it. Think of a few milestones in your life. We have hundreds of them! Everyday is a new adventure. Even as we’re going through big changes like getting married or getting a divorce, we still have to get up, suit up and show up.

Grace and Ease: The Art of Allowing

Grace and Ease: The Art of Allowing

This mandala (my favorite one in the book) was inspired by the realization that life unfolds in perfect and miraculous ways like a flower blooming into perfection with no intervention. When I was going through the worst periods of my life, I thought it would never get better and that I didn’t deserve love. I could not see how I could possibly fix the mess that I perceived my life to be. Looking back, I see that by the grace of God, we are placed into circles and communities of people who are supporting us, even if we’re not aware.

Co-Creation: Contracts are Made

Co-Creation: Contracts are Made

This mandala was inspired by an Aboriginal tale of a snake shedding it’s skin to begin anew. When a snake gets too big for its’ skin, it naturally sheds off as the snake gets bigger and bigger. Shedding its’ skin is easy and makes room for new growth. Many times in my life I’ve shed parts of me that no longer fit and began a new phase in my life. Sometimes the shedding was natural and easy. Sometimes it was a struggle. I didn’t want the changes to be happening! It wasn’t fair, it was hard but it happened anyway. Every
